You Can't Rank For
What You Don't Know
Most businesses are targeting the wrong keywords — or no keywords at all. We find exactly what your customers are searching for and build a strategy around those terms, not guesses.
Why It Matters
The Wrong Keywords Are Worse Than No Keywords
Here's the problem most businesses don't realize they have: they're spending time and money creating content and optimizing pages — but none of it is targeted at the terms their actual customers are searching. They're either chasing keywords that are too competitive to realistically rank for, or they're targeting terms with high volume but no buying intent.
Keyword research is the foundation of every other SEO decision you make. It determines what pages you build, what content you write, how your site is structured, and where your internal links should go. Get it wrong and everything built on top of it is misaligned. Get it right and the rest of your SEO compounds much faster.
For local businesses in Kansas City, the stakes are even higher. The gap between ranking #1 and ranking #4 for a local search term is enormous — and the difference usually isn't content quality. It's keyword targeting. We find the terms where you can win, and build your strategy around those first.
What's Included
What You Get With Keyword Research
Not a spreadsheet of keywords. A complete strategic map of what to target, where, and why.
Primary & Secondary Keyword Mapping
Every page on your site gets a clear keyword target — primary, secondary, and supporting terms — so nothing is competing with itself and Google knows exactly what each page is about.
Search Intent Analysis
Not all keywords are equal. A keyword like 'what is SEO' attracts researchers. 'Kansas City SEO agency' attracts buyers. We tag every term by intent so your content is matched to where your customers actually are in the buying process.
Competitor Gap Analysis
We pull the keywords your top competitors are ranking for that you're not — and prioritize the ones where you have the best shot at closing the gap quickly.
Local Keyword Strategy
For KC-area businesses, we go beyond broad terms and build out a local keyword map that covers your service area — neighborhoods, suburbs, and city-specific modifiers that your customers are actually using.
Content Cluster Planning
We group related keywords into content themes — a pillar page supported by targeted blog posts — so your site builds topical authority over time instead of scattered pages competing for the same terms.
Internal Linking Recommendations
Once your keyword map is built, we show you exactly which pages should link to which — so authority flows correctly through your site and Google can follow the connections.
The Impact
What Keyword Research Changes
Every component of keyword research solves a specific ranking problem. Here's what each one changes.
| Research Component | Without It | With It |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Keyword Assignment | Pages compete against each other; none rank well | Every page has one clear job and a path to ranking |
| Search Intent Mapping | Content mismatches what Google wants to rank | Content format aligns with dominant SERP intent |
| Competitor Gap Analysis | Building content in the dark; missing proven opportunities | Content roadmap built around gaps competitors haven't closed |
| Keyword Difficulty Filtering | Targeting terms the site can't realistically rank for | Focused on winnable keywords that build momentum |
| Local Keyword Strategy | Generic city-level targeting that misses neighborhood intent | Suburb and area-specific terms that match how locals search |
| Content Cluster Planning | Scattered pages with no topical authority signal | Interconnected cluster that builds authority over time |
How It Works
The Process, Start To Finish
No mystery. Here's exactly what happens when we do keyword research together.
Discovery Call
We start by learning your business — your best customers, your competitors, your geography, and what you've tried before. Keyword research without this context is just guessing.
Competitor & SERP Analysis
We map out who's ranking for the terms that matter to you, why they're ranking, and where the gaps are. This tells us where the real opportunities are before we pull a single keyword.
Keyword Research & Categorization
We build out your full keyword universe — primary targets, secondary terms, long-tail variations, local modifiers, and question-based queries — then organize them by intent and priority.
Content & Page Mapping
Every keyword cluster gets assigned to a page — existing or to be created. You end up with a clear map of what needs to be written, rewritten, or optimized.
Delivery & Walkthrough
You get a clean, organized keyword strategy document — not a spreadsheet dump. We walk through it together so you understand the reasoning behind every recommendation.

Kansas City Focus
Local Keyword Research For KC Businesses
Local search is a different game. "Near me" searches, neighborhood-specific queries, and suburb-level keyword variations all behave differently than broad national terms — and most keyword tools don't surface them well.
I specialize in the KC metro market. I know what people in Overland Park, Lee's Summit, Olathe, and downtown KC are searching for — and I can build a local keyword map that puts you in front of the right customers in the right areas, not just generic city-wide searches.

Common Questions About Keyword Research
How is this different from just using a free keyword tool?
Free tools give you data. What they don't give you is context — which keywords actually match your business, which ones your competitors are vulnerable on, which ones signal buying intent versus casual research, and how to map them across your specific pages. The research is the easy part. The strategy is what moves rankings.
Do I need keyword research if I already have an SEO strategy?
Probably yes — most SEO strategies I audit are built around assumptions rather than data. Either the wrong keywords are being targeted, the right keywords are spread across too many pages, or there are high-opportunity gaps nobody has noticed. A fresh keyword audit often reveals quick wins that have been sitting there untouched.
How often should keyword research be updated?
At minimum, annually. Search behavior shifts, new competitors enter the market, and Google's understanding of topics evolves. For active content programs, a quarterly review of your keyword map is worth doing.
Can you do keyword research for a niche industry?
Yes — and niche industries are often where keyword research pays off most. Less competition, more specific search intent, and buyers who are further along in the decision process. Golf, home building, real estate, healthcare — I've built keyword strategies across all of them.
Will you implement the changes or just give me a document?
Both options are available. I can deliver the keyword strategy and map so your team or developer can implement it, or I can handle the full on-page implementation as part of an ongoing SEO engagement. We'll figure out what makes sense for where you are.
What tools do you use?
Primarily SEMrush for competitor analysis, keyword data, and SERP tracking — plus Google Search Console data from your own site where available. GSC data is often the most underused asset in a client's toolbox.
Ready To Stop Guessing And Start Ranking?
Let's build a keyword strategy around what your customers are actually searching for. No fluff, no generic lists — just a clear map of where the opportunity is and how to go get it.
