Google Search Console
The most valuable free SEO tool available — and the most underused. GSC gives you direct data from Google on which queries trigger your pages, how often you appear, and what technical issues are holding you back.

Most businesses set up GSC and never log in again. That's a missed opportunity — the Performance report alone contains keyword data, CTR insights, and ranking opportunities that no third-party tool can replicate.
GSC is the only source of data that comes directly from Google. Every impression, click, and position figure is pulled from the same system that determines your rankings — making it the most reliable SEO data source you have access to.
- See exactly which search queries send traffic to your site
- Find pages with high impressions but low click-through rate
- Request re-indexing after updates without waiting for Googlebot
- Identify crawl errors and coverage issues before they hurt rankings
- Monitor Core Web Vitals scores for mobile and desktop separately
- Track ranking position trends for any page over time

What GSC Measures at Each Stage
| GSC Report | What It Shows | How Often to Check | Primary Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | Clicks, impressions, CTR, position by query and page | Weekly | Keyword opportunities, CTR optimization |
| URL Inspection | Index status, crawl date, structured data, mobile usability | After every update | Confirm Google sees the right version of a page |
| Index Coverage | Indexed pages, crawl errors, excluded URLs | Monthly | Find pages Google can't reach or is ignoring |
| Core Web Vitals | LCP, FID/INP, CLS scores for mobile and desktop | Monthly | Identify pages failing page experience signals |
| Sitemaps | Submitted sitemaps and indexed URL count | After new content | Confirm new pages are submitted for crawling |
| Links | Top linked pages, external links, internal links | Quarterly | Understand your link profile from Google's view |
From Setup to Ongoing Optimization
The URL Inspection tool is critical for diagnosing individual page issues. Enter any URL to see its indexing status, last crawl date, mobile usability assessment, and any structured data found on the page. The 'Request Indexing' function accelerates Google's re-crawl of a page after you've made changes — use it every time you update a priority page.
The Index Coverage report shows which pages are indexed, which are excluded, and which have errors. Pages stuck in 'Discovered — currently not indexed' or 'Crawled — currently not indexed' states are ranking opportunities being left on the table. Diagnosing and resolving these is some of the highest-leverage technical SEO work available.
Quick Checklist
- GSC ownership verified via DNS TXT record
- Both HTTP and HTTPS versions verified (or domain-level property used)
- Sitemap submitted under Sitemaps section
- Performance report reviewed weekly for query and page data
- Index Coverage report checked monthly for errors and exclusions
- URL Inspection used after every significant page update
- Core Web Vitals report checked for mobile and desktop pass/fail status
GSC Setup & Optimization Pipeline
Verify Domain Ownership
Add a DNS TXT record through your domain registrar. Domain-level verification covers all subdomains and both HTTP/HTTPS variants — avoiding the need to verify multiple properties separately.
Submit Your Sitemap
Under the Sitemaps section, submit your XML sitemap URL. This tells Google which pages exist on your site and prioritizes them for crawling. For most CMS platforms, the sitemap URL follows a predictable pattern like /sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml.
Baseline the Performance Report
Set the date range to the last 90 days. Record your baseline impressions, clicks, average CTR, and average position. This becomes your benchmark for measuring whether optimizations are working.
Find Keyword Opportunities
Filter the Performance report to queries with average position between 5 and 20. These are your highest-leverage pages — already indexed and partially ranking, needing content or on-page improvements to break into the top 4 where the majority of clicks happen.
Fix Coverage Errors and Monitor Ongoing
Review the Index Coverage report for errors and excluded pages. Fix any crawl-blocking issues, then set a recurring weekly cadence to review Performance and a monthly cadence to check Coverage and Core Web Vitals.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Google Search Console?
Google Search Console is a free tool provided by Google that lets you monitor how your website performs in Google Search. It shows which queries trigger your pages to appear, how often you show up, how often people click, and whether Google has found any indexing or technical issues with your site. It is the most direct source of data about your organic search presence.
How do I get Google Search Console?
Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with a Google account. Add your website as a property, then verify ownership. The recommended verification method is adding a DNS TXT record through your domain registrar — this verifies at the domain level and covers all subdomains and protocol variations automatically.
Can anyone use Google Search Console?
Anyone who can verify ownership or has been granted access to a property can use GSC. You can add additional users — as owners, full users, or restricted users — under Settings → Users and permissions. Agencies and consultants are typically added as full users so they can view all data without transferring ownership.
How much does it cost to open a Google Console account?
Google Search Console is completely free. There are no paid tiers or premium features — every business with a verified property gets access to the full Performance report, URL Inspection, Index Coverage, Core Web Vitals, and all other GSC tools at no cost.
What is the alternative to Google Search Console?
There is no true alternative for first-party Google search data — GSC is the only source of data directly from Google about how your site performs in its search results. SEMrush, Ahrefs, and Moz provide estimated keyword and ranking data, but they pull from third-party sources and lack the query-level accuracy of GSC. The tools are complementary, not interchangeable.
What can I do with Google Search Console?
GSC lets you see which search queries bring users to your site, monitor impressions and click-through rates by page, check indexing status and request re-indexing after updates, find and fix crawl errors, review Core Web Vitals performance, submit sitemaps, inspect individual URLs, and identify structured data issues. It is the diagnostic hub for organic search performance.
How do I find keyword opportunities in Google Search Console?
In the Performance report, filter to show queries where your average position is between 5 and 20. These are keywords where you already rank but not yet in the top 4 — the positions where most clicks happen. Improving the pages that rank for these queries can push them into high-click territory. Also look for high-impression, low-CTR queries, which point to title tag and meta description optimization opportunities.
Why does my site not appear in GSC after verification?
GSC data has a 2–3 day reporting delay, so recent activity won't appear immediately. For brand-new sites or newly published pages, GSC won't show data until Google has crawled and indexed your pages — which can take days to weeks without an existing backlink profile. Submit your sitemap immediately after verification to accelerate crawling.
